The growing technological advancements have given corruptors an advantage as they find new ways to commit crimes, including using cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum to hide illicit transactions.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is enhancing the skills of its officers in handling cryptocurrency-related corruption cases.

MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki stated that the agency is committed to strengthening its in-house expertise to handle cases involving digital currencies.

Several officers have received specific cryptocurrency investigation training, and the MACC is working closely with Interpol and the Digital Forensics Working Group to enhance its efforts.

To further enhance its capabilities, the MACC is focusing on training programmes that are proven to be effective and acquiring appropriate tools.

This will help investigators track and analyse cryptocurrency transactions more efficiently.

In addition, the agency is upgrading its digital forensics laboratory under the 13th Malaysia Plan, increasing facilities for mobile phone forensics laboratory, computer forensics laboratory, audio-video forensics laboratory and document analysis forensics laboratory.

With an increased budget to RM360 million by 2025, the MACC will have more resources to effectively combat corruption.
