Meta on Friday made a big bet on AI by 2025, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg announcing a spending of between $60 billion and $65 billion to bolster its AI infrastructure.
With the funding, the tech company plans to build a data center the size of a small city equipped with 1.3 million Nvidia graphics processors, with the hope that its AI assistants will be able to serve more than 1 billion people by 2025.
Zuckerberg said this year would be a ‘decisive year’ for the future of AI, prompting Meta to ‘upgrade’ to compete with big rivals like Microsoft and Amazon to master the technology.
The massive investment is a significant increase from its spending of $38 billion to $40 billion last year.
As part of its AI-boosting efforts, Meta will also develop AI engineers who will start contributing more code to research and design efforts, and continue to grow the team working on AI services.
