OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has announced a strategic partnership with Oracle and Japan’s SoftBank to build the world’s most advanced AI data center in the United States with an investment value of up to $500 billion.
The project, called “Stargate,” aims to strengthen America’s position in the global AI technology race, with Nvidia chips at the heart of the effort.
Microsoft, which previously held exclusive rights to OpenAI’s computing infrastructure since 2019, is now relaxing some of the terms of the agreement.
The move paves the way for OpenAI to collaborate with Oracle. However, Microsoft still retains exclusive rights to OpenAI’s APIs, ensuring Oracle cannot access OpenAI’s main source of revenue.
The Stargate project will be run as a new entity, with OpenAI having operational control and an equity stake. SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son will chair its board of directors.
Microsoft remains the primary technology partner, although it is not an equity partner in the joint venture.
With the involvement of big names like Nvidia, Arm, and MGX from the UAE, this project ushers in a new era in the global AI technology landscape.
This effort will not only enhance the competitiveness of the United States but also solidify OpenAI’s position as a leader in AI innovation.
