Panama Canal Continues to Be Trump's Target, Concerns Over Chinese Interference

Panama has filed an official complaint with the United Nations (UN) to condemn US President Donald Trump's threat to "take back" the Panama Canal.

The statement was made during Trump's inauguration speech, accusing China of secretly controlling the canal through Hong Kong operator Hutchison Ports, which manages the main ports at both ends of the waterway.

Following the speech, Panama launched a comprehensive audit of the Panama Ports Company to ensure compliance with the concession agreement.

However, the operator denied it and defended its transparency, saying all financial reports were shared with the Panamanian government.

Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino rejected Trump's claims, insisting that the canal would remain a neutral area under Panamanian sovereignty without involving foreign interference.

However, with Trump known for his tough stance, it is not impossible that military action would be taken, thus further increasing tensions that are already at a peak.
