Malaysia plans to produce its own graphics processing unit (GPU) chips within the next five to ten years.
The move is aimed at reducing reliance on imports and creating a stronger and higher-value technology sector in the country.
Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli shared this vision at the Malaysia Economic Forum 2025, stating that Malaysia must move beyond just assembling semiconductor parts.
Instead, the country should start making its own chips to support local demand but also position Malaysia as a major player in the global technology market.
In addition, Rafizi also touched on the shortcomings of data centers that require high electricity and water consumption.
Despite this issue, he believes that data will become as important as electricity and water.
Strengthening Malaysia's infrastructure and expanding its semiconductor capabilities can help the country leapfrog ahead in the global technology race.
If successful, Malaysia could soon be known for producing its own high-performance GPU chips.
