Sarawak’s ambition to become a major hub for renewable energy in Southeast Asia is now looking brighter as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has held talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to that end.
The two-day official visit, which begins on Wednesday, will focus on investment and trade opportunities, particularly the energy transition plan presented by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Sarawak has previously proven its success in exporting electricity to Kalimantan, Indonesia, proving the region’s great potential in the energy sector.
Abang Johari stated that the state government is optimistic about the expertise of Sarawakians in the fields of electricity and new energy, which will help make Sarawak a major hub in the sector in the ASEAN region.
With the upcoming international collaboration, Sarawak is seen as having the opportunity to drive the development of the renewable energy industry throughout the region, thus opening up space for greater investment and innovation.
