South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol was detained on Monday after hundreds of anti-corruption investigators and police raided his residence to end a weeks-long standoff.

Suk-yeol had previously been indicted on charges of rebellion over his short-lived attempt to impose martial law last month, making him the first president in South Korean history to be arrested.

Hundreds of police officers and investigators from the Corruption Investigation Bureau packed the entrance to the presidential residence before dawn today.

It was their second attempt to arrest Suk-yeol.

The first attempt on January 3 failed after an hours-long standoff when members of the Presidential Security Service (PSS) refused to cooperate while authorities executed an arrest warrant.

Now, President Suk-yeol's lawyer announced on Facebook that he had agreed to speak to investigators.

AFP reporters reported a brief scuffle at the gate as Suk-yeol's staunch supporters camped out to protect him as authorities began to swarm the compound.

Meanwhile, Suk-yeol said in a recorded video message that he had decided to be questioned to avoid bloodshed, even though he believed the investigation was illegal.

Suk-yeol can be held for up to 48 hours under an existing warrant. Investigators will need to apply for another arrest warrant to keep him in custody.
