It is reported that 2.4 million 10kg bags of subsidized local rice will be available in the market starting March 1, targeted at poor and extremely poor households.
Deputy Secretary-General of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Badrul Hisham Mohd said this marks the start of the government's RM150 million targeted subsidy program to ensure that local rice is affordable for the target group.
He added that the bags are marked and tracked to ensure that only the targeted households buy the rice.
Badrul Hisham also said that they will launch a special sale of 10,000 10kg bags of subsidized local white rice priced at RM26 in Kedah during the Muda Agricultural Development Authority (MADA) event on February 27.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is also expected to launch a project worth RM1 billion to increase paddy production at the event.
