Amazon's move to close a warehouse in Quebec, affecting more than 1,900 workers, has sparked legal action.
Workers represented by a union are seeking justice in court, demanding that Amazon reopen the warehouse, stop the layoffs and pay workers compensation.
The union accuses Amazon of using a cunning strategy to circumvent labor laws, including requiring it to provide workers with a comfortable working environment by turning to subcontractors, such as Montreal-based delivery company Intelcom Courrier Canada Inc.
The lawsuit comes just months after workers at a Laval warehouse near Montreal successfully formed a union and began negotiating a fair workplace agreement.
However, Amazon claims the closure has nothing to do with the union.
In the wake of Amazon's actions, which it considers unfair, the union has called on users of the platform to cancel their Prime memberships and stop using them.
The issue has drawn the attention of Canada's industry minister, who has criticized Amazon's actions for affecting workers.
