Private sector employment growth in the U.S. increased in January, according to the ADP National Employment Report released on Wednesday.
Private sector employment rose by 183,000 jobs last month after an upward revision to 176,000 jobs in December. Economists interviewed by Reuters had previously expected an increase of 150,000 jobs after an initial report of 122,000 in December.
The ADP report, developed in conjunction with the Stanford Digital Economy Lab, is released ahead of a more comprehensive and highly anticipated jobs report from the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday.
There is no correlation between the ADP report and the BLS jobs report. According to a Reuters poll, private sector employment is expected to increase by 141,000 jobs in January after a gain of 223,000 in December. Overall, nonfarm payrolls are estimated to have increased by 170,000 jobs after a surge of 256,000 in December. The unemployment rate is expected to remain unchanged at 4.1%.
