Taiwan on Monday strictly prohibited its government departments from using China's DeepSeek artificial intelligence (AI) service to avoid any security risks.
Democratically governed Taiwan has long been wary of Chinese technology given Beijing's claims to sovereignty over the island and its military and political threats to the government in Taipei.
During a cabinet meeting, Taiwanese Prime Minister Cho Jung-tai said DeepSeek was banned from use in all government agencies to ensure the security of national information.
He added that there were also concerns about censorship of DeepSeek and the risks of Chinese information.
Taiwan's Ministry of Digital Affairs said on Friday that government departments should not use DeepSeek, but did not specifically say it was banned.
Authorities in South Korea, France, Italy, Ireland and other countries have also been examining DeepSeek's use of personal data.
