The US government plans to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico this Saturday, with the possibility of exempting oil still under discussion.
President Donald Trump suggested that factors such as market prices and trade relations would influence the final decision.
The tariffs are part of an effort to crack down on illegal immigrants and the entry of dangerous substances into the country.
Trump hinted that the percentage could be increased or modified from time to time depending on the situation.
According to Trump, there are also discussions about introducing new tariffs on goods from China aimed at curbing illegal exports of fentanyl from China to the US.
China previously agreed to curb such exports during negotiations between the two sides during the Biden administration, but at the same time they also said that the US needs to address its domestic demand for the illicit substance by improving recovery programs, enforcement measures and public awareness campaigns.
