Secretary of State Marco Rubio said after talks between senior US and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia that the United States and Russia agreed on Tuesday to restore their respective diplomatic missions.
The move appeared to mark a significant easing of restrictions on Russian diplomatic missions in the United States imposed by the previous US administration over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.
The Riyadh talks were intended as a step toward ending Russia's war in Ukraine as promised by President Donald Trump who took office last month.
Rubio said the two sides agreed as a first step to appoint a team of officials to work quickly to restore the functioning of their respective diplomatic missions.
He added that the State Department did not immediately respond to a request for details of the current operations of the US mission in Russia.
Rubio's Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov raised the functioning of the Russian-US missions with Rubio in a call on Saturday ahead of the talks in Riyadh.
However, Ukraine may see this move as a potential threat to its fight against Russian aggression, but it still depends on the details of the agreement between the US and Russia whether it gives Ukraine room or not.
