DBKL Sets 2-Hour Parking Limit – Fair or ‘Sue Trap’?

Like it or not, there will be no more ‘parking cops’ in Kuala Lumpur for a long time!

Starting April 7, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will implement the 2-Hour Parking Lot system, limiting parking on the capital’s roadsides to a maximum of two hours.

This project will start in Medan Tuanku and Jalan Ipoh Kecil, before being expanded to more areas from June next year.

Parking charges vary by zone – Zone A RM1.50 per hour, RM2.50 for two hours (maximum one transaction), Zone B RM1.00 per hour, and Zone C RM0.80 per hour with no transaction limit and payment must be made only through EZ KL Smart Park.

DBKL claims that this measure is aimed at preventing drivers from ‘leasing’ public parking spaces, so that more people can have parking opportunities.

However, the question is – what if the transaction takes more than two hours?

Will drivers have to go out and find other parking in the middle of the transaction? Or worse – get sued or clamped for exceeding the time limit?

DBKL claims this is to reduce congestion, but is this a fair solution or just burdening the people with suing and fines?
