With US President Donald Trump’s 25% steel tariffs, global producers are now flooding Europe with cheap metal.
Not wanting to be a victim, the EU has pulled the emergency brake – cutting steel import quotas by 15% from April.
Want to import more than the quota?
Yes, but be prepared for a 25% tax!
EU Executive Vice President Stephane Sejourne insisted that the EU would not let its industry collapse while other countries flout WTO rules.
With European steelmakers already struggling due to high energy costs and fierce competition from Asia, EU leaders fear the bloc could become a dumping ground for cheap steel.
But this is just the beginning.
By 2026, Brussels is planning a tighter trade shield, along with new rules that give European steel priority in government contracts.
‘Melt and poured’ rules will also be introduced to prevent importers from hiding the origin of steel.
The EU message is clear – steel will not be the ‘new gas crisis’!
