Johor is determined to become completely independent from relying on Singapore’s treated water!
With an investment of over RM5 billion, the state will build three new water reservoirs and three new treatment plants by 2030.
This mega project will be jointly funded by the federal and state governments, with Putrajaya bearing the cost of the reservoir worth RM1.6 billion, while Johor will finance the treatment plant worth RM3.5 billion through Ranhill SAJ.
Currently, Johor still imports 16 million gallons of water per day from Singapore, far exceeding the original agreement requirement of 5 million gallons.
The main reason?
The cost of local water treatment is almost RM1.80 per cubic meter compared to just 11 sen from Singapore!
But with the rapid development of the data center and semiconductor industry with 17 newly approved data centers that will consume 59 million liters of water per day, Johor can no longer rely on imported water.
Zero Dependency is getting closer - is there enough water, or will Johor run dry in its mission to be self-reliant?
