Can the US Really 'Buy' Ukrainian Energy?
In a phone call on Wednesday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, US President Donald Trump proposed that the US own the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant – the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.
Surprised by the proposal, Zelensky firmly rejected it, insisting that the plant was Ukraine's sole property.
However, Zelensky hinted that Kyiv might be open to US investment if the plant was successfully recaptured from Russia.
The idea, described as "extraordinary" by Ukrainian officials, came as Trump sought to speed up the end of the war.
However, experts warn that the plant is not just out of operation, but is in critical condition with its water supply dwindling.
One analyst said the plant could be likened to a living lizard – useless, but still refusing to be released.
What's next? Does the US really want to 'buy' Ukrainian energy – or is this just a ploy by Trump to shake up war talks?
