The United States announced the addition of dozens of Chinese technology companies to its export blacklist in the first effort under the Donald Trump administration to curb artificial intelligence and computing capabilities.
The US Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security has added 80 organizations to the blacklist, more than 50 of which are from China.
The move prevents American companies from supplying goods or services to the listed entities without obtaining a formal government permit.
The agency also said the companies were blacklisted for allegedly acting contrary to the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States.
The move is part of an ongoing effort to block Beijing's access to exascale computing technology, which can process large amounts of data at extremely high speeds, and quantum technology.
A total of 27 entities from China have been blacklisted for allegedly acquiring US-origin goods to support the country's military modernization. In addition, seven firms were also sanctioned for their role in advancing China's quantum technology capabilities.
