Are other states so smart?

No wind, no storm, suddenly Sabahans will feel as if they have won the ‘jackpot’ – free personal accident insurance starting 1 May 2025, offered by the Sabah state government.

This scheme will involve 3.5 million Sabahans, providing protection of up to RM10,000 and a funeral benefit of RM500, which will be fully borne by the state government.

Yes, FULLY by the state government.

Although this initiative is being praised as a step to help the B40 group, some are starting to ask, is this more of a sweet move to ‘attract attention’ at the right time?

Datuk Suhaimi Nasir, a representative from Sabah Umno, expressed concerns about the government’s financial commitment over the three-year period, and more importantly, the transparency in choosing Progressive Insurance to manage this scheme.

In Sabah's increasingly 'tight' financial situation, is it possible to sustain this program without sacrificing vital sectors such as health and education?

Or, could this be just a temporary 'sweet' solution that will only invite long-term burdens with price increases in other sectors?
