Trump has said there are negotiations twice, China has said it's all an illusion twice. If this is a TV drama, Abang Jamil hasn't even finished his 3rd comma yet.
First, US President (US) Trump made a statement that he was holding discussions with China to ease the trade war, but it was vehemently denied by China.
And Trump again insisted at a press conference yesterday, Trump said that the discussions had been held that morning but did not reveal who was involved, arguing that "who was involved is not important" and refuting China's denial.
On the other hand, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun described the report as fake news, and insisted that no negotiations or agreements had ever taken place between the two countries.
Mystery and confusion. Two words that are currently sweeping the market, making many people squint just to follow the continuation of this debate.
A White House official did reveal, however, that there were indeed low-level meetings and phone calls between US and Chinese staff this week to give the impression that at least something was happening, although it was not officially announced.
Global markets remain jittery. The US has imposed 145% tariffs on Chinese goods in retaliation for Beijing’s restrictions on exports of critical minerals.
In this ambiguity, only one thing is clear: the reality is that people and businesses in both countries continue to suffer, while their leaders point fingers at each other.
