Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that he would send several officials to the United States (US) to begin a dialogue on the tariff issue.
This was done because Malaysia does not believe in megaphone diplomacy, but instead uses a prudent approach.
Malaysia and the US have good commercial relations and Malaysia also supports the growth of the profit model.
However, this tariff situation can be detrimental to all parties.
He further said that despite the tariff wave hitting Malaysia, the country will not waver and continue to be a strong trading partner with the US.
This includes engaging proactively with the US to achieve mutual benefits and strengthen relations with all major trading markets in the European Union (EU), Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
The country's total trade in goods is estimated at US$3.5 trillion (RM 15.69 trillion). With the increased tariffs, global trade harmony is seen to be affected.
Anwar Ibrahim said the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump are not the first and last challenges.
Trump announced a 24% tariff on Malaysia and it will be implemented starting on April 9, 2025, Wednesday.
